IBCO: Member Benefits and Services
As an IBCO member or retiree, you're entitled to member-only benefits such as financial assistance in the event of disability or layoff. These programs are designed specifically for union members and their families.
CONTRACT - The most important reason to join a union is to get a contract with your employer. Contracts, or collective bargaining agreements, specify the terms and conditions of your employment. All contracts that IBCO negotiates for its members include a just cause provision, which permits employers to discipline employees only when the terms and conditions of the contract have been violated. This means that all supervisors must treat you fairly and equally.
LEGAL REPRESENTATION - IBCO is different from other unions because we use attorneys to represent our members rather than business agents. Attorneys are provided to our members at no additional cost for all work-related hearings and arbitrations. IBCO uses attorneys to represent its members more than any other labor union.
ATTORNEY OF THE DAY - Members can call the National office at 617/376-0220 anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET to get an attorney's advice on work-related legal situations. The role of attorney-of-the-day is filled by staff attorneys on a rotating basis.
REPRESENTATIVE OF THE DAY - Like the attorney-of-the-day service, this service permits members to call 617/376-0220 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET, and speak to a National Representative. National Representatives can assist members with contract enforcement issues, procedural issues, legislative information, and internal union issues. SOLIDARITY - IBCO is affiliated with the National Association of Government Employees and the AFL-CIO (over 14 million members.)
LOBBYING - IBCO employs a staff of full-time lobbyists who work in our nation's capitol and in many state capitals where we have members. IBCO lobbyists work with elected officials to advance the interests of our members. IBCO also runs a Committee on Political Education (COPE) which is funded through voluntary contributions of our members. When IBCO COPE is fully funded, it will be a powerful weapon in the war against anti-employee legislation. We urge you to fully support this initiative.
